Heart Disease and Erectile Dysfunction

*Watch as Dr. Aquino speaks on CTV Canada AM!

NOTE: Men with Heart disease and other vascular diseases who also suffer Erectile Dysfunction, tend to have a form of ED known as Vasculogenic Erectile Dysfunction.  In this situation the small blood vessels in the penis are damaged, leading to ED.  A NEW NON-MEDICATION TREATMENT for Erectile Dysfunction, SHOCK WAVE THERAPY, creates new healthy blood vessels in the penis, and can greatly improve erections Without medication.  Since the treatment does not involve medication, men on heart medications can still safely undergo this treatement.

There are many myths suggesting that men with heart disease can't take medications to treat Erectile Dysfunction (ED). There are even more myths suggesting that these medicines actually cause heart problems. These are just myths. In most cases, men being treated for heart problems can safely take medications for ED. Often, vascular disease (which includes heart disease) is the cause of the Erectile Dysfunction.

However, some men (and women) require nitrate medication to alleviate symptoms of heart disease. Men who are on nitrate medication regularly, have frequent angina (chest pain) or have an unpredictable or frequent need for nitrate medication, cannot take tablets to treat Erectile Dysfunction.

Heart Disease and Erectile Dysfunction

Fear not. There are other methods of effectively and safely treating ED in these situations.

Before jumping right into action though, each man should assess whether he can tolerate the exercise involved with sexual activity.

AT OMH we welcome men with heart disease, and will work with you to determine the safest and most effective treatment for your Erectile Dysfunction.

I know that sex is supposed to be one of the most enjoyable parts of life, but I always found it stressful. Usually I would ejaculate just as my wife and I were getting started. After awhile I wasn't even getting good erections. My wife always smiled and did her best to make me feel that it didn't matter, but I could sense disappointment. I tried to achieve more at work to make up the difference. I finally got up the nerve to see a doctor after reading something in a magazine. I had it all wrong. With some simple treatment and practice, things have improved dramatically for my wife and I. Now we are both smiling.

My wife and I were getting along OK, but we had slipped into a routine of avoiding sex because it was awkward for both of us when I couldn't perform. We just put it down to age and moved on. One day I just decided to look into it further, and let me tell you, don't let anyone tell you that you need to give up sex just because of your age. Our life is much more complete now than it has been in years. Get help today. My wife and I are so glad we did.
